Boggs is a denizen of "a little one-horse town in a big bend" in Arkansas. He has a tendency to get drunk and wage empty threats at various people; he meets his fate when he threatens Colonel Sherburn further than Sherburn's ultimatum would permit, and is shot. A lynch mob masses, but is dispelled by an unfazed and still-armed Sherburn.
